Have You Ever Lied About Seeing a Classic?

From Laurie Boeder, About.com GuideOctober 12, 2009

Follow me on:

I readily admit I've never made it through the first five pages of Ulysses, so the idea of lying about whether or not I've seen a classic film has never even occurred to me. For example, I will tell you right now that I still have not seen Roman Holiday. (I know, I know. It's coming on Netflix next week, I promise.)

But a survey in the United Kingdom says more than half of men and almost 40 percent of women have lied about whether they've seen a classic movie. Really. (The BBC even provided a handy guide for faking a few crucial films.)

I'm always afraid that if I lie about something like that, I'll be caught. I'll miss some detail that everybody should know about the film or the book or the play I've pretended to know. It just mushrooms out of control.

So tell me - have you ever lied about seeing a classic? Why? And, did it work?
