Horror film maven Rob Zombie will re-remake the classic 1950s sci-fi flick The Blob, but don't expect a big glob of pink jello to menace the townsfolk.
Zombie, fresh off his remakes of Halloween and Halloween II, says he has a much "darker" vision for the project. No doubt.
Back in the '50s, the violent slasher films Zombie makes were not just unheard of, they were pretty much unthinkable for commercial cinema. Today, the original Blob seems quaint, campy and slow -- more schlock than shock.
Zombie's version may be a remake in name only, which leads me again to reflect on Hollywood's obsession with remakes. Are they safer financially? Does no one want to take a risk on original ideas, so filmmakers have to shroud them in remakes? Or is everybody just fresh out of ideas?
Work on the picture begins in spring.
