Farewell to Pat Hingle

Wednesday January 7, 2009
You might not have known his name, but hsi face was instantly recognizable to fans of movies and TV. Durable, versatile character actor Pat Hingle has died of cancer at 84.

Classic movie buffs know him as Warren Beatty's father in Splendor in the Grass, and the nasty bartender poking at Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront. With a face that could play either an upright cop or a menacing crime lord, he played in Clint Eastwood shoot 'em ups and even a Muppet movie. And of course, he appeared as Commissioner Gordon in the first four Batman films.

His television and stage careers were just as impressive. He played in dozens of classic television shows starting in the 1950s, from Twilight Zone to Gunsmoke. On Broadway, he originated roles in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Price. A remarkable, memorable career.
