Couples With Chemistry on TCM
Turner Classic Movies will feature an onscreen toast to classic film couples on November 18th and the 25th, and they've paired up with Chronicle to do a handsome book on the same subject: Leading Couples: The Most Unforgettable Romances of the Studio Era. The book is loaded with great stills and fun little factoids about dozens of screen pairings.
Can't argue with their picks for the movie nights either, although they could have done many, many more: To Have and Have Not, featuring Bacall telling Bogart to "just whistle;" Cleopatra with Elizaberh Taylor and Richard Burton; Top Hat with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. But I did a spit take when I saw A Night at the Opera onthe list.
They were a great screen pair, no doubt about it...but I don't think anybody would call the team of Grocuho Marx and Margaret Dumont a romance.
