Changeling Writer Tackles Robby the Robot

Saturday November 1, 2008
Has Hollywood always been this obsessed with remakes?

Word now that J. Michael Straczynski, the respected sci-fi and comic book writer is trying his hand at a script for a remake of the fab old sci-fi classic, Forbidden Planet.

Straczynski is currently earning props for his screenplay work on the just-released The Changeling (Angelina Jolie, directed by Clint Eastwood, no less), so I actually have high hopes.

Forbidden Planet has an intelligent, intriguing premise, and while it had pretty good special effects for its day, an update with today's technology could be smashing. And I have to admire a writer who's willing to take on a '50s classic that finds its roots in the immortal bard. (It's a retelling of Shakespeare's Tempest.)

One warning, though. They better not mess with Robby the Robot. He's sci-fi royalty.

I’m not sure about making a remake of this film, as the original holds a special place in my heart. Sure the special effects would be great, but could they really make it soulful or intelligent. Here I am remembering the remake of Dawn of the Dead. It was nowhere near as good, even with updated effects.

I hear you, jh. I always hope for the best from remakes, but generally expect the worst.

I wonder if anyone has a list of remakes that were as good, or gulp, better than the original?
