Ahoy - the Great White Screenplay

Sunday October 19, 2008
I love it when my favorite worlds collide - in this case, the world of classic movies and the world of great writing.

Ray Bradbury has always been one of my favorite authors. Now, for the first time, his screenplay for the 1956 classic Moby Dick will be available.

There was controversy between Bradbury and director John Huston for years over the screenplay. Huston gave himself a co-writer credit on the film, but Bradbury claimed the screenplay as his own, and they had legal struggles.

The great allegorical story of obsession and self-destruction has always caused trouble. Herman Melville thought it as his best work, but it never sold, and the original plates and most of the book were destroyed in a fire. He never lived to see it proclaimed a masterpiece.
