Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Gets a Remake

Monday September 22, 2008
I can't tell if the world is suffering a dearth of new ideas, or if I've just finally lived long enough to see that everybody's ideas get recycled over the course of a couple of generations.

The next classic movie-to-Broadway-back-to-remade-movie is the sweet old children's classic, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. (I've always been amazed that the book was written by Ian Fleming. From magical car to 007. Who knew?)

I assume that once again, the movie wizards will try to improve the dazzle quotient with special effects not available back when Dick Van Dyke stared as the crackpot inventor and Sally Ann Howes starred as Truly Scrumptious in the original 1968 film. Let's just hope they don't mess up the story, the music and the charm.

While the special effects could certainly be improved upon from the original version (Not to say that they were all that bad to begin with)… Once again, I’m sure we will see a remake that just doesn’t even begin to improve upon the original version in story and script!! And there is just NO WAY that anyone out there can improve upon Dick VanDyke’s performance…

I bet they mess up the parts that add any kind of meaning or depth to the movie (ie. those created by Roald Dahl)…
