Wewease Bwian! Mayor Wants Python Ban Ended
Nearly 30 years ago, the Welsh town of Aberystwyth banned the irreverent Monty Python classic Life of Brian.
Today, the woman who played Judith Iscariot, Brian's girlfriend and partner in the movie's famous nude scene, wants that ban finally lifted.
She's the mayor.
According to the BBC, Aberystwyth was one of the many conservative towns around the globe that banned the movie in 1979 as disrespectful to Christianity in its chronicle of Brian Cohen, a young man born just down the street from Jesus' stable, who's continually mistaken for the Messiah. The controversy only added to the movie's popularity.
Mayor Sue Jones-Davies argues that the film is mild by comparison with what's on the telly today, and who can argue with someone wearing those silly Welsh mayoral duds? Let's hear it for satire, free speech, and silliness. Huzzah.
