Three Wrongs Don't Make One Marilyn Monroe Right

Wednesday February 27, 2008

I swore I wasn't going to post about this, but now a third celebrity has decided to try and re-make herself into Marilyn Monroe. The first was ubiquitous Paris Hilton for the premiere of her "movie." The second was tall, skinny mom-to-be Nicole Kidman in a somewhat more respectful take, yet still a little icky, for the Australian version of Harper's Bazaar.

The one that broke the camel's back was drug-addled LiLo baring it all for the same photographer who did the infamous last photo shoot with Monroe nearly half a century ago. Yuck.

The 79-year-old Bert Stern shot young actress Lindsay Lohan chewing on an assortment of sheer scarves, draping herself this way and that. The photos, more pathetic than erotic, crashed New York magazine's web site and have become an Internet sensation.

There's a thin line between homage and exploitation, and at least two of these sorry young women crossed it.

Thank heaven we can still see the real thing. Try looking at Marilyn in Some Like it Hot. A sweet, funny movie, and a great antidote for sleaze.

UPDATE: Michael Musto of the Village Voice has since done a hilarious parody of the Lohan photos. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
