Ouch - Watch Out For Movie Fakes
Wouldn't it be cool to have Bogie's personal cigarette case? Wouldn't you just love to use that as a conversation starter?
Well, before you plunk down a few thousand dollars at a movie memorbilia auction, make sure it's the genuine article.
Dallas news media report that a respected local auction site has to make thousands of dollars in refunds after discovering the "Bogart" case sold at a recent auction is probably a fake - along with a whiskey flask allegedly owned by Errol Flynn and Lash LaRue's bullwhip. The red-faced auctioneers are now checking out some 200 items provided by the same shady outift over time. The stuff brought in more than $340,000, and all of it is under question now - including the gun Steve McQueen was supposed to have used in The Great Escape.
Oops.
If you bought any movie memorabilia from Heritage Auction in Dallas, you might want to give them a ring. I wonder if they had any Maltese Falcons?
