Roy Scheider Dead at 75

Monday February 11, 2008

Roy Scheider, wiry, suave star of Jaws and All That Jazz, with his trademark broken nose, has died of multiple myeloma at a hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was 75.

His superb performance as legendary dancer and Broadway choreographer Bob Fosse in All That Jazz earned him a 1979 Oscar nomination as Best Actor, although he lost to Dustin Hoffman.

And his intense delivery as police chief Martin Brody in the 1971 shark-attack thriller gave him the opportunity to utter one of those immortal cinematic lines that finds a lasting place in everyday speech: "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

He earned another nomination for his supporting role in The French Connection, and also played memorably in Klute and Marathon Man. A younger generation might recall his turn on the TV series "Seaquest DSV." Here's the Times of London obit.

Roy was one of my favourites. great presence on screen, especially his gritty voice. Have left some classics even his later work still shows off his innate ability.

Loving your work, you’ll be missed.

Love me some Scheider. Jaws wold not have been the same without him in the role. He left the world some classics. I reckon I’ve seen them all.
