Visit Orson Welles in Croatia

Sunday January 27, 2008

Orson Welles, famed for his brilliance as an auteur early in life and later for his boozy outtakes from wine and frozen-pea commercials, has posthumously become a citizen of Croatia.

And this extremely cool statue of him graces the town of Split, on the Dalmatian coast. I've been wanting to go to that part of the world anyway, and this just makes it all the more attractive.

Welles, writer director and star of Citizen Kane, spent the latter decades of his life with Oja Kodar, a Croatian actress and sculptor, and spent time with her in her homeland. I can't tell if she made the statute, but this is better than a star on the walk of fame.
