The stunning early sci-fi masterpiece of German expression, Metropolis, will be getting a remake, according to Variety.
I don't think anybody can top it visually, and I hope they don't try. This silent film, insanely expensive when Fritz Lang made it in 1927, has the most extraordinary deco look ever committed to film, not to mention one of the great movie robots of all time. Its influence over the look of subsequent films is hard to overstate.
And it's a great movie too, with the workers in an oppressive city-state of the distant future toiling underground to support the lavish lifestyles of those above. And unlike so many science fiction movies that have passed their expiration dates (1984, anyone?), Metropolis is set in 2026. So there's still time for the whole thing to come true.
