The Most Famous Movie Quotes No One Ever Said

Monday October 22, 2007

Humphrey Bogart never said, "Play it again, Sam."

Bela Lugosi never said, "I vant to suck your blood."

And James Cagney never said, "Top of the world, Ma!"

Those wacky kids at the list universe have favored us with yet another handy list -- the top 15 movie misquotes that persist in the popular culture.

Also among the classic movie misquotes are Mae West's oft-imitated, "Come up and see me sometime," from She Done him Wrong and the Mexican bandit sneering "Badges? We don't need to show you no stinkin' badges!" from Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

I say if you're going to misquote, misquote from the best!

(1) Mae says:

MAE WEST repeated some of her most popular movie lines during live performances. Therefore, the lines morphed into popular culture based on the version of the line people heard at different times. But Mae is entertaining no matter how you recall the quip or one-liner attributed to her: in a movie or live.

(2) Richard Williams says:

A few years ago the American Film Institute honored James Cagney with a Lifetime Achievement Award. After all the accolades had been presented by other people, Cagney took the podium. He finished his talk saying, “I want you to know, I never said ‘you dirty rat’, what I did say was Judy, Judy, Judy.”
