The Swedish Master Passes Away

From Laurie Boeder, About.com GuideAugust 1, 2007

Follow me on:

Ingmar Bergman, the master of dark and brooding films that contemplate the eternal questions, has arrived at his personal answer to the big one: Bergman has died at age 89.

His films inspired generations of directors and cinematographers, as he worked from his home on the bleak northern Swedish isle of Faro. He made more than 50 films, putting them out almost every year, always working with the same small group of close friends and fellow artists. His best-know films include the Seventh Seal (featuring the extraordinary scene of a kinght playing chess with Death), Wild Strawberries, Cries and Whispers, and Fanny and Alexander.

Tempermental and poetic, Bergman was a womanizer who discovered or worked with many of Sweden's most beautiful actresses, marrying five times and fathering eight children.

Roger Ebert has an excellent appreciation in the Chicago Sun-Times, including a link to some of the master's greatest scenes, and quotes from other film directors praising Bergman and his classics.
