Classic Films with Big Box Office

Thursday July 19, 2007

If you think today's blockbusters blow the classics out of the water at the box-office , think again.

Box Office Mojo has a list of the top grossing films of all time, adjusted for inflation, and the classics more than hold their own with more recent entries.

The winner and still champion is, of course, Gone With the Wind, beating out Star Wars. Biblical epics do well, including Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments. Musicals, too, like the Sound of Music and My Fair Lady.

Children's movies are also well-represented from animated classics like Pinnochio to adventures like Swiss Family Robinson.

You can argue with the methodology, and there are lots of factors at work in any measure of a film's success, but it's clear that great classic movies had the same kind of drawing power that today's big box-office flicks command.
