Where's the DVD for Claudette Colbert's "Midnight"?

Wednesday May 30, 2007
According to several Hollywood blogs, Reese Witherspoon has signed to make a remake of 1939's Midnight with Claudette Colbert.

By all accounts, it's a great screwball comedy, but I can't seem to find it available on DVD anywhere. Let's hope the interest in a remake will spur Universal to release the original in a nice, remastered DVD.

I mean, I've got nothing against Resse Witherspoon, but a screwball comedy with Claudette Colbert, co-written by Billy Wilder? Hard to see how they'll top the original.

Meanwhile, while we're waiting for the DVD of Midnight, why not go back and see It Happened One Night again? Can't be beat.

Actually Billy Wilder only wrote the screenplay with Charles Brackett. Mitchell Leisen directed the film. It’s a great, underseen and underappreciated screwball comedy that’s as good or better than the acknowledged classics of that genre already on DVD. I have to admit the idea of a remake upsets me a little, but if it gets the original released on DVD then maybe it’s a necessary evil.
