Filmdom's Great Heroes and Villains, per AFI

Sunday May 13, 2007
Those list-making junkies over at the American Film Insititute have done it again. They've come up with AFI's list of the 100 greatest heroes and villains in American film.

I can't quibble with their top hero. Who doesn't think Atticus Finch of To Kill a Mockingbird is the best hero/dad ever? Although I have to say I'm a bit disappointed at Gandhi's rank -- he comes in at 21, well below Rocky Balboa. At least he's higher up than Lassie.

And their chief villain is pretty good too. Who isn't totally creeped out by Hannibal Lecter, especially when he's got his muzzle on? Still, I'd opt for a sentimental favorite -- Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West. Hannibal was a bad, bad man...but at least he didn't have flying monkeys.
